Fishery report for period 6th May to 12th May- The water remains lovely and clear with good challenging fishing on offer. 89 visits have resulted in 256 fish with 122 over 2lbs and the best weighed in at 4lb 12oz. All the usual methods are producing with buzzers proving very productive. We have seen some big caenis hatches and lots of fussy feeding fish where fish have been showing all over the place but getting them to take has proved somewhat difficult. Why trout seem to become so, so selective in caenis hatches I am not sure but selective they are and challenging they become! Still to a lot of us this is one of the joys of our sport and often 1 fish taken in a caenis hatch is worth 4 taken when the fishing is easier. When caenis are not hatching b ut showing on top small dries; shipmans; shuttlecocks etc have all produced and when fish are down a bit buzzers; diawl bachs and pheasant tails fished 2 to 6 foor down have been productive. For those of you who like a bit of lure pulling gold head damsels; cats whisker and the ever reliable black and green fritz, often pulled fairly quickly, should produce a fish or two. With regular stocking for the rest of May and water staying clear there is no reason why the good fishing should not continue.

Roger- 16th May

Fishery report for period 29th April to 5th May -Members visited the Fishery 89 times this last week and 256 trout were caught. The average size remains good with 122 of the 256 caught being 2lb+ fish. Best fish weighed in at 4lb 2 oz. The water still remains lovely and clear and good hatches, particularly hawthorn flies are coming off. However not too many fish have been taken off the top yet and buzzers and black and green lures fished ‘deepish’ have produced most fish. Warmer weather is still needed to ‘get the fish on top’ but sport still remains very good with 3282 trout caught season to date.

Roger- 7th May 2012

Fishery Report for period 15th to 28th April-What absolutelydiabolical weather we have had during this fishing period. The Wensum has been up and down like a yoyo with ‘gallons of water’ making its’ way downstream and ultimately out to the North Sea. On two occasions river levels have reached the base of the new bund which we have built but fortunately all has held and no lake flooding has taken place. Despite the weather the trout have not minded one iota and for the hardy few who have braved the elements some super catches and fish have been recorded. A further 500 fish have been caught in this period making a season total of just over 3000 against the 4800 stocked to date. The lake water still remains nice and clear and fish are feeding hard on buzzers although the old favourite ‘black and greens’; cats whisker and damsels are still producing. In fact use your favourite fly; fish it at the right depth in the fish holding spots and you will be unlucky if you do not come away with a fish or two. The evening has seen some very good rises but fish still seem, probably owing to the cold water temperatures, somewhat reluctant to put their noses out and ‘take a dry’ with most fish being caught sub-service from about 1 to 4 foot down. We must all hope that May provides some more pleasurable ‘fishing weather’ than April has given us but in terms of catches April has proven to be a very good month and further indication that the triploids, which we stock, relish rough, cold and wild conditions. Its’ us Anglers, particularly the older we get, who do not seem to like getting wet and cold so much these days!!!!!

Roger Gibbons-1st May 2012

Fishery report for period 10th -14th April-With the cold winds we have been having and the excellent catch rate season to date it is inevitable that things would slow down a bit and this was the case this last week. However 91 rod visits produced 241 trout for a rod average of 2.6 fish per visit. 96 Fish caught were over 2lb with the best weighing in at 3lb 8oz. Season total to date is 2512 fish which is a pretty good figure bearing in mind the season is only 7 weeks old. Again the black and green tadpoles; cats whisker and damsels are producing but the buzzer fishing is improving all the time. Fish have started to show in the evenings and some have been caught on emergers when fish have been right on top. So again it is ‘take your pick’ with whichever method you like to use but remember that with the water still quite cool fish are still ‘holed up’ and although more and more spots are producing location is still very important.

Roger Gibbons – 16th April 2012

Fishery report for period 29th March to 10th April- what a great 1st month of the season we have experienced with March producing over 1800 fish. The majority were over 2lb with numerous 3,s and Terry Maidstones super fish of 5lb 10 oz was the heaviest. Lot’s of different methods have produced, which is one of the joys of our Lake, with black buzzers on floating lines and longish leaders now coming into their own. If you spoon your fish you will find that even the most recent ‘stockies’ have numerous buzzers inside them. Also some good rises have been reported by members fishing into the evening and some fish have been taken ‘on top’ on dries and emergers. There is no reason to believe that April will not continue to produce good fishing, again to a variety of different methods and flies, with hopefully more and more fish starting to show on top as the water temperature increases. Fish are pretty well spread out around the lake at present but the hotspots of the bottom north west bay; the west bank, the gravels on the north bank and either side of the large willow on the south bank, together with inevitably the swims just up from the Club Hut, should all give you the chance of a fish or two. Do continue to enjoy the good fishing.

Roger – 10/04/12

Fishery Report for period 19th to 28th March- The good fishing continues with just on 600 fish caught over this period with an rod average per visit of just under 4 per rod. Well over 70% of fish caught have been 2lb + with the best this past week at 4lb 3 oz. The fish are now much more spread out and starting to feed well on buzzers based on the fish I have spooned and seen spooned. However the usual early season lures are still catching well but for those who enjoy more imitative fishing a team of buzzers or mixture of buzzers; diawl bachs and crunchers is now starting to be more productive. Again, in the bright sunshine we have enjoyed lately, the fish have been up and down in the water feeding at different depths. This was ably demonstrated by Pat Gibbons who started on Wednesday afternoon in bright sunshine on the west bank and the only way she could get a take was by fishing deep with a heavy goldhead on the point. However once the sun went in the fish moved right up in the water and a super rise started. The gold head was then useless but a couple of light black buzzers fished just below the surface proved very productive for her. I know I have said it more than once before but I cannot stress enough the importance of fishing the right depth particularly on a water like ours where often you are casting into 15 to 20 foot of water. The usual hot spots are now worth a look particularly the area around the gravels on the north bank; the top north west corner; the outlet, particularly if the breeze is showing into it; the middle of the west bank and of course the swims by the club hut. Surprisingly this year the top bay on the south bank has been nowhere near as prolific as it has in past seasons. Why who knows! Trout most certainly have minds of their own; occupy areas which they like and feed when they want to. Somebody once said to me the only predictable thing about trout is their unpredictability. How right that statement often is. Anyway continue to enjoy what has so far been a cracking season and with our planned stocking policy, and reasonable weather, the good fishing should continue for some time yet.

Roger Gibbons – 28/3/12

Fishery report Sunday 12th March to Saturday 18th March- Another excellent week with nearly 400 fish caught averaging just over 2lbs with the best recorded being 3.5lbs. Black and Green; Cats Whisker; Montana and Damsels on floating and intermediate lines all taking fish. Also pleasing to see that spooned fish are now containing buzzers and members are starting to catch on more imitative patterns, black buzzers particularly, with odd fish now showing on top. Fish continuing to spread around lake and the usul hot spots of gravels; west bank; club hut bank and outlet all producing. The mild weather forecast for this week should ensure fish continue to disperse providing members with far more spots around the lake likely to produce.

Fishery report Sunday 5th March to Saturday 11th March- after what can only be described as abyssmal weather at the start of the week with only ‘a few of the real brave’ members’ having a go, glorious spring weather prevailed and produced wonderful fishing. Numerous limit bags have been recorded with fish averaging 2lb+ in weight. The heaviest fish to date is a super rainbow of 5lb 10 oz caught by Terry Maidstone, a much respected member of our Working gang who do so much to preserve and improve the lovely lake we all enjoy. Well done Terry- rarely is a super fish like this more deserved! The fish are now starting to spread out a bit and although the south bank still remains favourite fish are showing in other areas. They should continue to spread as the water temperatures increase and the old favourite swims on the north and west banks should start to come into their own. It was pleasing to see our lady anglers in on the action with both Pat Gibbons and Audrie Robbins getting good bags of fish. The early season and favourite patterns as mentioned in my last report are still producing well with a lot of fish still in the top 4 to 6 foot of water. Floating and intermediate lines are still the most productive but do let you flies ‘get down a bit’ before retrieving.

Our new bund had it’s first test at the start of the week when the Wensum rose and flooded. It worked well and no flood water got in the lake. Also members will probably note the water in the lake is at a higher level than normal. We have purposely raised it 6 inches to conserve water if we have to contend with drought conditions later in the year. A benefit of this is already being seen as our older and less agile members now have less distance to stoop when netting their fish!!!!

Also the flood has done the river a world of good and cleared away lots of old established debris. It is now fining down nicely and some good chub are being caught. Make the most of this before the 14th March when the coarse season ends.

With the weather set fair for a few days there is no reason why the super fishing should not continue so get down and enjoy it.

 Roger Gibbons – 12th March 2012

Latest Fishery news at 5th March 2012

What a glorious spring day greeted the 36 members who fished on the first day of our season on Thursday March 1st. The vast majority enjoyed good sport with most picking up their 4 fish limit once they had found the fish. Location really was the key and although fish were caught all round the lake the south and east banks by the outlet proved the most productive. This also proved to be the pattern on Friday and Saturday when again this area of the lake came up trumps with most members managing to catch a few. All the normal ‘early season patterns’ such as black and green tadpoles; Montanas; cats whiskers; viva; marabou tailed damsels; black buzzers; hares ear; diawl bach etc. caught fish with lures probably having the edge over nymphs as the water is still quite cold. As I have mentioned in earlier reports trout at this time of the year, especially stockfish, really do shoal up in small areas and it is no use being 50 yards away! David Hanner found this really so on opening day spending the first 3 hours with no fish at all fishing the top end of the lake. A move to the outlet saw David get 4 fish in as many casts. If you are not catching and others around you are not catching also do move.Everbody likes to catch a fish or two especially early season. There will be plenty of time later on for more challenging fishing so do get a few fish ‘under your belt’ while the going is good by ensuring you fish the productive areas. A lot of fish have been caught using floating and intermediate lines with flies fished 4 or 5 foot deep but do vary the depth you fish until you find the fish. Depth and location, at this time of year, is far more important than pattern.

It is great to be fishing again and to meet up with members old and new. We all look forward to a good season ahead of us.
